The Albany Grasmere Wind Farm has been generating energy for Western Australia for over 20 years, as well as being an iconic landmark of the Great Southern region. The wind farm produces clean, renewable energy equivalent to 80 per cent of Albany’s annual electricity needs.
While the turbines are continuing to operate effectively there will come a time, as the turbines approach their design life, when they become less economic to maintain. Bright Energy Investment (BEI) has engaged Synergy to investigate the options for the future of the Albany Grasmere Wind Farm.
Environmental and wind studies are underway to determine the impacts and benefits of various options for the site. The results of these preliminary studies will help inform any future designs for the wind farm. A Native Vegetation Clearing Permit and a Development Application for the installation of a Met (Meterological) Mast at the Sandpatch/ Moodrenup site have been submitted to support these studies.
One option is to rebuild the wind turbines with newer technology, increasing the generation capacity.
